Put Your Signature on the Role

Why Should They Hire You?

The greatest auditions I’ve ever seen all had the same thing in common:

The actor found the story of the role
within themselves.

Forget about whether the actor knew the lines:

They knew the life of the character.

Hundreds of actors (sometimes thousands), from all levels, audition for the same role. They receive the same four pages of sides, and the same twenty-four to forty-eight hours to prep.

But as unique and fascinating as each of these artists may be, most auditions tend to fall flat. Because they tend to be the same.

There are a lot of reasons this happens:

  • Trying to get it “right” and figuring out “what they want”
  • Over-intellectualizing the prep, leaving you more in your head than in the room
  • Letting your own nervous system hijack your experience in the audition

Any one of these, or a host of other creativity killers, can result in a safe, forgettable audition.

To stand out, you need to tell the story of the role—as told by you, and only you.

Over the course of four classes, we will focus on how to do exactly that.

Class 4

Put Your
Signature on It

Translate your Private Sides/Script Prep work into an effective On-Camera Audition.

Class 1:
Find You in the Story

During this class, we will work together as a group, using one set of sides:

  • Finding the intersection between your story and the character’s story, personalizing the role
  • Crafting an imagination-stirring backstory, adding color and nuance to your performance
  • Turning the psychology of the role into behavior, leading to on-screen action that pops
  • Clarifying your unique intentions and point of view, so you’re free to “do”—not “act”

Class 2:
Inhabit the Character

Using the same sides from earlier in the week, each actor will “audition”—translating their prep into performance.

During the audition week we will:

  • Identify your strengths, both specific to the role at hand and also in-general
  • Pinpoint any areas that need improvement, including your prep and on-camera skills
  • Review your execution, how you make the role your own

Class 3:
Individualize Your Process

During this session, we will work together as a trio with your scene partner, using sides assigned in advance.

During this prep we will:

  • Run the sides as a mock audition to identify strong points and areas to strengthen
  • Tailor an imagination-stirring backstory, specific to what moves you as an artist
  • Turn the psychology of the role into behavior, leading to on-screen action that pops
  • Clarify your unique intentions and point of view, so you’re free to “do” — not “act”

Class 4:
Put Your Signature on It

Using the same sides from Class 3, each actor will “audition.” In this class, we’ll also focus on a pre-audition routine to help you:

  • Get into a mindset that helps you deliver the audition you’re capable of giving
  • Ground you in the waiting room, and the moment before the scene starts
  • Review your execution, how you put your signature on the role
