Scene Study

Play With Intention

Novelty, Engagement, Exploration

Every experience on set is its own—the moment your feet cross the threshold, you’re on a journey without a destination. Working alongside your scene partner(s) and collaborating with your director and writer, it’s up to you to find your way.

You are the vessel. Know the ropes.

Familiarity develops capability—by regularly working on new and diverse material, you develop a library of past experiences to guide you in the future. Working jointly with other actors on scenes in class, in front of a camera, with blocking, lighting, and audio, you will grow comfortable solving the immediate problems that occur on set.

Our goal in Scene Study is to help you become less aware of the technical necessities of filmmaking so you can focus on the moment-to-moment connections that occur naturally. By confronting the inevitable difficulties of producing a scene today (multiple takes, rewrites, shifts in eye-line, reproducing performances for other angles), you can avoid or reduce the emotional interference these conflicts can cause on a live set tomorrow.

Camera Operator

Scene Study is a revered part of all ongoing actor training. I incorporate the additional challenge of navigating actual production elements so that we can recreate the pressure you might feel on an actual set. I also provide footage so you can review your performance and assess areas for improvement.

No class can replace the experience of being on set.

But we can do our best to prepare.

Scene Work is a Collaboration

Actors in Scene Study are expected to:

  • Work closely with other actors
  • Participate in and maintain a space and atmosphere that supports risk
  • Review your footage weekly and monitor craft
  • Take notes of your work, areas of improvement, and lessons learned
  • Commit to encouraging and supporting artistic growth

Scene Study is a limited-enrollment in-person class. Actors come and go as their schedules allow, and attendance is reserved for those with a suitable level of prior training.

Practice, Prepare—Let Go

Booking a dream job comes with an incredible amount of emotional baggage—positive and negative. By working on the technical variables in advance, you leave yourself open to embracing more of the positive and less of everything else.

You are what you do every day.

It’s important to me that you are living your dreams now—that you aren’t waiting for “someday”. Regular Scene Work puts you in the practice of doing what you hope to do tomorrow, today.

I will send you footage each week so that you can align your in-the-moment on-set experience with what is captured on camera. Often, these are quite different. It’s worth exploring this disparity to calibrate your intentions with your execution.
