On Camera Lab
Fail Fast, Fail Often—In Private
Investigate, Discover, Execute, Refine
All artists need a place to experiment, a safe space to fail, thereby finding new ways to succeed. It should be playful and fun—but it should also have purpose.
You need a Lab.
Showing up to class and going through the motions is as useless as going to the gym and “kind of” working out. I have absolutely done both. And I’ve experienced the lack of results. Maybe you have, too.
Unfortunately, the difference between actually doing something and kind of doing something is often the difference between building a career versus maintaining a hobby.
An Artist’s Lab encourages you to train and sculpt your artistic muscles. It grants you the opportunity to craft your own technique, with guidance along the way. It empowers you to test and stretch your limits, strengthening your dexterity to perform under pressure.
As a coach, here’s my promise to you:
I will do everything in my power
to get you out of class and onto a set.
I want you working. But I can’t do that alone.
Classwork is a Dialogue
For my part, I will:
- Engage fully with your preparation and refinement in class
- Encourage and maintain a space and atmosphere that supports risk
- Review your footage weekly and monitor craft
- Design a customized plan to move you forward in your art
But I need your help. And that means a commitment to the work.
On Camera Lab is designed to be an ongoing practice for your development as an artist. Actors are encouraged to return to the Lab each month, as long as they are experiencing growth and progress.
Class Format
The Map Is
Not The
Territory
Break down sides, engage imagination, craft behavior, find your take on the role.
In Practice:
The First
Risk
Test your prep, your take, and the choices and decisions you live out through the scene.
Gamble,
Fail,
Refine
Take risks, explore your own approach, receive feedback and refine what works for you.
Work
What Isn’t
Working
Work on material, emotions, and situations that challenge your weak spots and foster growth.
* Actors receive sides and materials 48 hours before class, with a new focus each week. You are also welcome to bring in audition materials of your own.
Classwork Can Be Deceiving—Avoid the Pitfalls
When I worked in Casting, I knew that what seemed exciting in the moment of the audition sometimes didn’t pop when that same performance was reviewed on tape. The tape lacks the in-person magic that can smooth over rough spots we might otherwise miss.
The camera reveals all, the tape doesn’t lie.
I want to make sure that what you are doing in the room is great. But I also want to be certain it translates into the audition clips that directors and producers will likely watch from a busy set, in between takes. This is why we focus just as much on reviewing clips as we do on the work in the room. Your work must stand up later, too.
Each week, I will send your footage and encourage you to review and reflect on your performance. This will give you an opportunity to make adjustments for your next class and continue growing outside the classroom.
Class size is limited, to ensure quality work.
While everyone is encouraged to apply, this class will most benefit actors with some level of previous training. On Camera Lab is the perfect next step for actors who have completed conservatory training, university training, or other comprehensive actor development programs .
Applications are due by the third Monday of each month. Currently enrolled actors receive priority—new applicants are added to a waitlist, and invited into class when spots are available.
Refund Policy
Due to limited seating, we ask that you cancel 72 hours (3 days) before your class begins. After this point, no refund or credit will be issued. If you must cancel, please email [email protected] — refunds are in the same form as payment. Your spot is transferable to a friend, if arranged prior to the first session.
While unlikely, we reserve the right to reschedule due to emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances. If you can’t attend the new dates, you may choose a full refund, or credit.
