The secret to remarkable performances lies in your ability to merge the unique aspects of a character with the one-of-a-kind qualities that lie within you.
ctors understand that auditions are opportunities—potentially life-changing opportunities. So, when an audition comes in, your creativity often goes out the door, and “trying to book the job” becomes your focus. Learning the lines takes precedence over discovering the life and behavior under the lines. Giving “them” what they’re looking for replaces your curiosity and vulnerability. This often leads to your auditions falling flat, feeling pushed, or appearing generic.
If you have the good fortune to book a role, you might find yourself chasing an idea of what the character could be—trying to “do it right” and pursuing a vision of what might satisfy the director, producer, or creative team. While that might work for a time, it doesn’t lead to inspiring performances that pull at our hearts. And it might leave you feeling unfulfilled.
